No surprises at the National Television Awards

Well, the National Television Awards are over for another year. Dermot O’Leary lost out to Ant and Dec (who won for the 10th time – give someone else a chance guys!), as Best Entertainment Presenter and Coronation Street lost to Eastenders (again!).

It was all very glitzy and I’m sure the nominees enjoyed dressing up in their best going out clothes and had a good old chinwag with each other and probably a glass or ten of bubbly, but for me the whole event lacked a bit of fizz or any kind of excitement. It looked like the whole thing was yet another Simon Cowell production almost from start to finish.

Stacey Solomon (X Factor finalist 2008) opened the show, Matt Cardle (X Factor winner 2010) sang half way through, Ant and Dec had their award presented to them at the Britain’s Got Talent auditions in Cardiff and The X Factor won the Best Talent Show award.

We see enough of all these people everywhere else, surely we can find something else on TV or some other entertainers in need of work that are not directly related to Simon Cowell.

It could be said that it might be mainly youngsters that vote for and watch the awards, but that argument flies out the window with the awards given to Bruce Forsyth and David Jason, the latter beating Dr Who himself, Matt Smith and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch to the honour of Best Drama Performance.

Gino keeps his promise

Elsewhere, This Morning scooped Best Topical Magazine Show. Whether or not this was because Gino D’Acampo promised to cook naked if they won will never be known, but he was true to his word and did just that on today’s show. This Morning will do anything for a good giggle and that’s something we would like to see more of across the TV schedules to cheer us up.

What did you think of the awards – be sure to let me know.
