It was Race For Life weekend in Leeds on 25th and 26th June and runners turned out in their thousands at Temple Newsam House to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.
I was there to represent Which Bingo UK with my friend from Free Bingo UK, CMKaren, and we were determined to complete the gruelling 5km cause to earn the £330 that friends, family and colleagues had generously sponsored us, including friend of WhichBingo Wonder Bingo and the lovely Trevor and Andrew from Sunlight Bingo and and Mad About Bingo
It was a hot day on Saturday when we were running, but hindsight is a wonderful thing and we got off lightly; Sunday was a real scorcher here in Leeds and I felt sorry for everyone that was running that day.
How ever optimisticit might have been we set off with the joggers at a steady pace, but it turns out that the Temple Newsam Race for Life course is the hilliest in the UK and those hills soon took their toll.
There was a definite mixture of walking and jogging, especially after the 3km stage. Karen and I lost each other about 1km in as I thought that she had been able to run on ahead of me, so I spent the rest of the run trying to ‘catch up’. Turns out she had in fact had to drop back as an earlier foot injury had started to be a problem and she was unable to maintain a steady jog.
Thanks to me trying to catch a phantom Karen in front of me I finished the course in 40 minutes. Karen carried on bravely to the end and even managed to break into a run to cross the finish line in a very respectable 53 minutes in spite of her injury – well done Karen and well done us.
The whole event is extremely well organised and is well worth the effort to take part. Thanks again to all the wonderful people that were good enough to sponsor our effort. If anyone would like to donate to the cause there is still time here – http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/BingoGirls2011
