Bingo backs Haiti Fund Appeal

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I was very pleased to receive an email from our friends at FreeBingo UK today, encouraging bingo players to show support for the Haiti Earthquake Fund.

The email contained the following links, all of which are great places to donate money to help the people in Haiti:

UNICEF:www.unicef.org.uk
ActionAid:www.actionaid.org.uk
British Red Cross:www.redcross.org.uk
Oxfam:www.oxfam.org.uk
World Vision:www.worldvision.org.uk
Save the Children UK:www.savethechildren.org.uk
Action Against Hunger: www.actionagainsthunger.org.uk
Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC):www.dec.org.uk
Merlin:www.merlin.org.uk
Salvation Army: www.salvationarmy.org.uk

At a time when the world’s attention is rightly focussed on Haiti, it is great to see bingo sites doing their bit to get behind the appeal for aid.

Balloon boy and train baby put bingo on hold

Friday, October 16th, 2009

I was just settling down to read the latest bingo news, but this morning’s news headlines are full of reports on the little boy feared to have been carried off by a hot air balloon in America and the baby run over by a train in Melbourne.

The two bizarre, terrifying stories both ended happily, with the little boy found in the attic of his house and the baby escaping with only a bump on the head.

After two such harrowing tales, I am definitely in need of some light relief and a bingo game. Fortunately, there is a new TV ad from Sky Bingo to check out today, as well as their £20,000 jackpot game, which costs just 2p to enter!

Let’s hope the rest of the weekend is free from drama and full of bingo!

‘Eyes Up’ for Bingo on Everest!

Friday, October 9th, 2009

The weather is pretty chilly here in Yorkshire this morning, but not half as chilly as it will be during the first game of bingo to be played on Mount Everest!

Gala Bingo players are climbing Everest

Gala Bingo have announced that 24 of their most dedicated bingo players will tackle Everest in an attempt to smash the record for the World’s Highest Game of Bingo.

Now, I might be wrong, but this is going to involve slightly more effort than popping on the net for a game of online bingo, methinks. And it won’t be like putting on your jacket and catching the bus to your local Gala Bingo club.

The intrepid group have been training hard as they prepare to take on dehydration, altitude sickness and deep vein thrombosis on their voyage – obstacles more hazardous than even the grumpiest of bus drivers!

As well as hoping to break the world record, the Everest base camp bingo players aim to raise £100,000 for Sue Ryder Care, to contribute to Gala Bingo’s target of £1 million by the end of the year.

Personally, I wish them all the best in their quest (but I’m going to make myself a warm cup of coffee and play bingo online!).

Hate hospital food? Love bingo? You’re not alone…

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Just been reading an article on The Guardian about a somewhat controversial new bingo game idea…Hospital Food Bingo!

'Hospital Food Bingo'

'Hospital Food Bingo'

The report explains how a hospital patient known as ‘Traction Man’ has been lamenting the quality of the food on offer by photographing it and arranging the pictures into a bingo card, which he then posted on the internet.

The bingo card itself makes for fairly gruesome viewing and of the hospital’s ‘Southern-style drumsticks’ Traction Man said:”Unfortunately the menu didn’t state the origin of southern. In my case it was southern Ethiopia. Never have I seen such scrawny and aged chicken. There was more stick than drum.”

Budget brings more bother for bingo

Friday, April 24th, 2009

After years of hardship and struggle, it would have been nice to have seen bingo given a break in this week’s Budget 2009 speech. And for a moment, it looked as though Chancellor Alistair Darling had been kind to our beloved game.

But the axing of VAT on bingo halls was swiftly followed up by the hammer blow of gross profits tax for bingo being hiked up from 15pc to 22pc. Then, as if to rub salt in the wounds, a 9pc increase on duty payable on amusement machines in bingo halls was announced.

It all makes for unhappy reading for those in the industry and it seems more challenging times lie ahead for the bingo industry.

B-I-N…G20…O! BINGO!

Friday, April 3rd, 2009
The G-20 leaders get together to discuss online bingo

All eyes have been on London this week as the leaders of the world’s richest nations descended for the G-20 summit, but here at WhichBingo UK we can’t help but think the Group of 20’s nickname sounds like a bingo call!

On a traditional bingo card, the 20s are listed under the letter I. Perhaps the Group of 20 would like to invite a few more leaders to their gatherings and become the G-57. That would be much more in the bingo spirit!

The leaders came to a $1Trillion agreement to plough money back into the world economy, which equates to around £747 billion. With the online bingo industry expected to be worth $2billion in a matter of years, we think its time the world leaders called “eyes down” and started giving bingo some help!

I’m sure that Barack Obama, Gordon Brown, Nicolas Sarkozy and their friends would enjoy a few rounds of bingo at their next meeting. Could be a real money spinner!

Hats off to Mrs Obama!

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

The Obama family are having a good year in 2009 and Barack’s stepmother Kezia has just presented Sue Ryder Care with a cheque for £20,000 that she raised through online bingo!

‘Mrs Obama Bingo’ was the name of Gala Bingo Online’s room, launched to celebrate the inauguration of the new U.S. President, Barack Obama.

The room itself, which was fronted by 67-year-old bingo fanatic Kezia, raised £10,000 and Gala Bingo kindly matched that figure to bring the donation to £20,000.

Hopefully Barack will have taken note of his stepmum’s passion for bingo (and will re-open the U.S. market to the wonderful world of international online bingo!)
