Changing fortunes of Mirror Bingo

It's a strange world in which one company can be strongly supported in its financials by its involvement with online bingo, while another can see its figures dragged down as bingo customers disappear.

Mecca Bingo owner Rank recently announced that its online bingo and casino sections were helping to keep it level in a challenging climate, but Trinity Mirror, which runs Mirror Bingo, has revealed that its online bingo involvement is currently negatively affecting the gains it is making in attracting digital advertising as the bingo customers are not materialising at the levels expected.

Many newspapers make their profit from advertising revenues and many have looked to supplement this with their online bingo games. Sun Bingo has done this remarkably successfully and has even supplemented this recently with the new Fabulous Bingo site, launched on the back of its Saturday supplement of the same name.

It is thought to be the increased competition in the online bingo market that is contributing to the Mirror Bingo problems as many other sites are marketing aggressively since the rules relating to online gambling were relaxed somewhat. Where before the newspaper bingo games could push themselves to their readers they are now facing competition from advertising on TV and from many bingo sites sponsoring popular daytime television programmes.

Mirror Bingo started very strongly and its success contributed strongly to the Trinity Mirror bottom line, but this has been declining since 2009. However, this does not mean that the bingo site is taking things lying down and has started to push itself to the forefront once again with a new look and a new network deal.
