Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, has cut the Bingo Duty in his pre budget announcement.
From the next Budget, the Bingo duty will be cut from 22% to 20%. The news will come as a welcome relief to the land-based bingo industry. The likes of Mecca and Gala have suffered in the last few years from the onslaught of online bingo, the smoking ban and the raising of Bingo Duty, they claim unfairly, from 15% to the previous 22%.
The Bingo Association, the bingo industry's trade body had been running a campaign, under the banner of 'I'm backing Bingo' to campaign for the redcution in Bingo Duty. On July 1st this year, Bingo players and clubs had united in a demonstration at the Houses of Parliament to protest. The Bingo Association and bosses from nine bingo firms, including the two largest, Mecca and Gala, joined hundreds of customers from across the UK wearing Alistair Darling face-masks and waving banners.
No-one from the Bingo Association was available for comment at the time of going to press.
