Bingo's Coming Home

Football fever has returned with the start of a new season but according to research from St. Minver, it is not the only ball game gripping the nation.

The research, which surveyed 2,667 online bingo players, reveals that more people are choosing to play bingo at home because they find it more sociable than playing at the local bingo hall.

Players said that in a bingo hall, they were scared of coughing or sneezing because of the deathly stares they get from other players. However, when playing from the comfort of their own homes, they are free to meet new people and catch up with old friends. Half of those questioned said they liked to chat whilst playing and see online bingo as a way of socialising and a good source of gossip.

The survey has also discovered that where a player is from influences how sociable they are. Southerners are the friendliest players keen to get chatting in the chat rooms, whereas Northerners are more competitive, not wanting to give their secrets away and would rather watch the conversations than partake.

One thing that is the same online as it is offline, is people’s love of going to the bingo with friends. Just as if they were going to the local bingo hall, people said they liked to meet people on Instant Messenger beforehand and then go to the site together.

Not only are online bingo players social butterflies, they are also skilled multi-taskers. Many of those questioned liked to combine playing with a variety of everyday activities including ironing or watching TV. 78% of those surveyed had children and enjoyed the flexibility of online bingo which allowed them to enjoy a good game whilst keeping a watchful eye on their kids.

Online bingo also offers players the chance to get up to make tea, go to the toilet or smoke without missing out on winnings. Over 60% of players smoke, this combined with the introduction of the smoking ban makes online bingo an attractive way to carry on playing.

The differences between men and women also became visible in the survey. Traditionally, women would have to sit with their partners while they watched the football; they now go upstairs to play online bingo. Many of the men questioned would wait till their partners are asleep and play online bingo downstairs.

Online bingo is a fast growing area and appeals to both women and men of all ages. The survey was carried out to provide a detailed insight into online bingo players, their profiles and playing habits. This first of its kind survey was conducted in association with Glendale Marketing and took the form of focus groups in London and Manchester and an online survey of 2,667 people from the St Minver UK Bingo network which includes VirginBingo, BingoBingo.co.uk and Yahoo Bingo.
