Despite the recession and the huge growth in popularity of online bingo there are still almost 600 live bingo halls in Britain with an army of loyal customers that play regularly. Conversley there are many more people to whom the inside of a bingo hall is a total mystery, together with the understanding of why they are so important to so many.
To try and remove the mystery and explain the phenomenon that is the bingo game, photographer Michael Hess has produced a new book, Bingo & Social Club. The book has been lovingly produced with strong images that visibly portray crumbling facades, strong characters and the nostalgia for the heyday of live bingo.
In Bingo & Social Club Michael Hess focusses on the human elements of the clubs and their community spirit. He says, “I want people to feel that they’ve spent a night at the bingo – to sense what it feels like to be there.”
To do this he has visited over 60 bingo clubs up and down the country speaking to a wide variety of players and bingo staff. Jack, a club manager from Newcastle, produced so much insight that many of his observations run through the book. Michael Hess says of Jack, “He’s quite a character – tough and yet extremely dignified – and I knew straight away he could add the extra dimension I was looking for."
This book focusses quite strongly on the independent bingo halls that often set up home in old, disused cinemas, although the flagship Beacon Bingo hall in Cricklewood is featured.
Anyone looking for a Christmas gift for a bingo fan should consider Bingo & Social Club.
