We are all familiar with Paddy Power Bingo and tombola falling foul of the regulators with their TV campaigns, but now it seems that even the most innocent looking of bingo TV adverts are attracting the attention of those opposed to gambling.
The Gambling Reform and Society Perception Group submitted a complaint recently about the Fabulous Bingo TV adverts which were running. These were the ones that featured two women of drab appearance with messy hair, glasses and no make up who were instantly transformed following a 'Fabulous' makeover when they signed up to Fabulous Bingo.
Now those of us that enjoy our online bingo and are familiar with the brand get the link between the two events, as the magazine that the site is affiliated with is all about fashion and make up and making the best of yourself and the site tries to continue the theme with its offers and giveaways. However, the Advertising Standards Agency upheld the complaint that the TV ad breached gambling advertising guidelines by "linking gambling to seduction, sexual success and enhanced attractiveness".
Not everyone reads The Sun newspaper and receives its free publication Fabulous Magazine on a Saturday and as such the link between the nature of the magazine and what went on in the TV ad would not be universally recognised
The ruling concluded that, "Because the ad featured such an overt transformation from dowdy to glamorous through playing the branded bingo game there was an implication that playing the branded bingo game could result in enhanced attractiveness and an improvement in self-image,"
It went on to say, "We therefore considered that from that ad directly linked the online bingo game with enhanced attractiveness and concluded that the ad breached the [advertising] code".
Well, WhichBingo readers can judge the transformation moment for themselves below and can still take advantage of a free £5 no deposit bingo bonus by joining Fabulous Bingo from any of our links to the site - that's an offer that wouldn't have featured on the TV ad as it's exclusive to us.
