The ASA have banned an advertisement issued by top online bingo site Tombola Bingo having ruled that the ad breached CAP (Broadcast) TV Advertising Standards Code rules 6.1 (Offence) and 6.6 (Harmful or negative stereotypes) following receipt of two complaints.
The ad for the Tombola bingo site, widely shown at prime times, showed two men on a beach - a white man wearing a dinner suit and a black man in a floral shirt and playing a ukulele.
The black man repeated in song everything the white man said:
“If you sign up this month to tombola.co.uk; we will match your first deposit up to twenty five pounds; thank you Tito; ola tombola”.
Advertising watchdog Clearcast said that they had reviewed the ad on more than one occasion and it did not appear to them that it might be interpreted as enforcing a negative racial stereotype. In their view the tropical island of Tombola was fictional, simply represented a host and a member of staff and they considered the repetition as a normal advertising tool to reinforce the offer being promoted. The characters were intended only to reflect the friendly and welcoming nature of the Tombola website.
The ASA were not inclined to agree on this occasion and upheld the complaints. Tombola have said that they do not intend to use the ad again.
The campaign in which the advert featured followed the decision by Tombola to change the bingo site theme from a fairground to a tropical background. The irony of this will not be lost on many who will remember that Tombola also faced initial criticism of the fairground imagery as being too enticing
to children.

I don't think that tombola is a friendly site anyway - it seems if you are from the south and voice an opinion, you will get banned from chat, whereas the northern players, can say what they like! I used up my bonus play then left it - I didn't like the site!
