Slots boost for land based bingo

Bingo halls could receive a boost if plans to relax limits on the number of slot machines in bingo clubs get the go ahead.

Clubs can currently offer just four £500 jackpot slot machines but Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe has proposed the limit be raised to eight.

Should the proposals be passed in the House of Commons, the bingo industry could finally receive some good news after the smoking ban and double taxation ravaged the last 12 months, forcing many clubs to close.

Sutcliffe told Reuters: “Bingo clubs play a crucial role in many communities and we want to see that continue.

“For some people, especially older and retired women, bingo is their main leisure pursuit. It is therefore of great concern that nearly 100 bingo clubs have closed in the last four years.”

Bingo Association Chief Executive Paul Tallboys said the industry will "breathe a huge sigh of relief", adding that the move "keeps bingo viable in all parts of the country".

"We believe today's announcement will go some way to addressing the adverse position bingo operates under and will help ensure that bingo remains part of the social and leisure landscape in the UK," he said.
