People in the United Kingdom played more bingo than anyone else in the world during 2009.
The research by WhichBingo.co.uk, from data provided by Google Insights (www.google.com/insights/search), analysed the popularity of different gambling related search terms across the world. Poker came out on top in 62.5% of locations, while the casino vertical also performed strongly in all locations aside from the UK, where it narrowly beat betting search terms to come 3rd in the popularity charts.
Until 2006 bingo was relatively unheard of online in the UK, which was reflected by the fact it ranked below all other gambling activities.
UK residents make approximately 9,140,000 bingo related searches on Google every month, with Mecca Bingo and Gala Bingo proving to be the most searched for brands.
In the United States casino and poker searches continued to prove popular despite Government legislation which bans all online gambling.
It was only Australians who searched for betting phrases more than bingo, casino or poker.
The generally weak performance of betting could be linked to the number of people now searching for odds comparison services or specific events.
The Grand National continues to provide the UK with a significant uplift in betting search traffic, with volumes more than doubling in the run up to the Aintree classic.
Lady Gaga helped poker maintain it's world-wide dominance of the gambling industry in searches made on Google.
The American star held 3 entries in the top 10 poker related search phrases during 2009, thanks to her hit single "Poker Face".
