Prize bingo is the kind of bingo game normally played in funfairs and amusement arcades, for small participation fees and modest prizes. It is also popular in UK seaside resorts.
Prize Bingo will often offer points to the winner of each game which can be redeemed in a dedicated shop near to or within the Prize Bingo Rather than winning cash prizes as per normal bingo.
With Prize Bingo, as with any bingo game, somebody is guaranteed to win every game. However some venues may not commence a game of Prize Bingo until a certain number of people are playing.
Section 288 of the UK Gambling Act defines prize bingo games as 'a game of bingo in which neither the size nor the nature of the prize is determined by the number of people playing (nor indeed the amount paid into the game). Instead, the prize is put up in advance by the organiser of the game.'
The maximum price that can be charged for a bingo card (ie for any one chance to win a prize in a game of prize bingo), is 50p. The maximum total fees that can be taken for a game of prize bingo is £500.
Under their existing UK licensing laws bingo halls, licensed family entertainment centres, travelling fairs, adult gaming centres, and holders of family entertainment centre gaming machine permits are automatically entitled to offer prize bingo. Theme parks and holiday camps may offer prize bingo under a prize gaming permit issued by a local licensing authority.
