Flutter Makes Move to Acquire Tombola

One of Britain’s longest-serving independent online bingo brands could soon be operating under new ownership. The news follows the confirmation that Flutter has offered over £400m to acquire Tombola, often describes as ‘Britain’s biggest bingo site’.

The deal to buy Tombola

Founded by industry veteran Phil Cronin and after staying in the same hands since 1999, it looks as though Tombola may finally be moving to pastures (and management) new.

The brand’s potential new owner comes as somewhat of a surprise, however, as it’s better known for operating sports betting and casino brands.

Flutter publicly announced the deal on Thursday, 18th November 2021 when it confirmed that it had offered Tombola’s current owner £402m for the business.

If all goes well, the transfer of ownership will occur in the first quarter of 2022, and Flutter’s chief executive can’t wait. Peter Jackson has already thanked Tombola’s founder, Phil Cronin for “building the success story that the business is today”. He also confirms that the existing Tombola team will become part of Flutter.

Tombola Bingo Review

As we mentioned earlier, Tombola has been offering online bingo since 1999. It now claims to be “Britain’s biggest bingo site” and it also employs more than 300 people.

The company has bases in Sunderland, Madrid, Milan and Gibraltar as its popularity quickly spread from the UK to Spain and Italy.

All the brand’s games are original and unique, being developed by in-house designers, offering players an extraordinary number of options including Pulse, Bingo 90, Hex, Bubble Bingo, Roller-Coaster and Picture Bingo.

In July 2016, it opened a sister site called Tombola Arcade where it continues to develop and market its in-house casino games, which range from online slots to instant wins and card games.

This is a surprising development and let’s hope it doesn’t mean bad news for the 200+ team of chat hosts that the brand is famous for – keeping rooms manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Flutter has in the past made the decision to employ all their chat hosts abroad. Also, the loyal player-base that has been mentioned in many articles as the foundation of the tombola success story, don’t take kindly to change, so Flutter needs to ensure they make any changes with a light touch.
