Girl Power Within the Bingo Industry

While the world celebrated International Women’s Day on 8th March, we started wondering how many powerful, independent females actually hold top jobs in the bingo and casino industries.

Bingo, in particular, has historically enjoyed a predominantly female audience, although this is gradually changing, but we’d be surprised if all the major operators were also run by women.

Casino games are often pitched at men, while online slots typically show women in submissive roles rather than heroines.

So, are there really all that many (or any) female role models for female bingo and casino players to aspire to?

As it turns out, there are quite a few powerful females who are responsible for keeping the UK’s bingo and casino operators on top of their game, the most famous of whom is Bet365’s Denise Coates. The CEO and founder of the popular online sports betting brand isn’t just Bet365’s figurehead. She’s also one of the top-paid bosses in Britain today!

Other prominent women in the industry include Irina Cornides and Janine Woodford-Dale, who are the Marketing Manager and CCO of Gamesys respectively. Gamesys is a company that owns several big-name brands including Jackpotjoy, Heart Bingo, and Virgin Games.

Jette Nygaard-Andersen is the newly appointed CEO of Entain – the operator behind Ladbrokes, Coral, Gala, and Foxy Bingo – and she’s joined by three female non-executive directors (Virginia McDowell, Vicky Jarman, and Stella David).

There’s also Debbie Husband, the Operations Director of Grosvenor Casino, and Claire McDaid, VP of Bingo at Pragmatic Play.

Slot developers like Microgaming are also doing their bit to try and include more female protagonists in their games, and in the past year, we’ve seen both new Agent Jane Blonde and Tomb Raider (Lara Croft) slots appear.

Jackpotjoy paved the way for girl power in bingo back in 2010 when it appointed Dame Barbara Windsor as its Queen of Bingo, and more recently, Gala Bingo began its “Bingo Like a Boss” campaign, fronted by sassy TV presenter Paisley Billings.

That’s not a bad list of top talent and hopefully, we’ll continue to see more women emerge as heroines and leaders of the UK bingo and casino industry!
