The Story Behind Gala Bingo's Paddle Pals Ad

Gala Bingo’s latest TV spots continue to build on its 2020 ‘Bingo Like a Boss” rebrand. So far, we’ve seen Paddle Pals, and there are still three more ads yet to be aired, including Walk on the Wild Side and Ice Queen.

While Gloria (a.k.a. Tattoo Fixer’s Paisley Billings) can still be seen ‘bossing it’ in many TV and digital adverts for Gala Bingo, the eagle-eyed readers and viewers among you may have noticed that Gloria seems to have gained a few rivals of late.

Last month, the popular UK-based bingo operator launched a new series of ads, the first of which stars a young woman and her grandmother who enjoy playing online bingo and also happen to be pretty awesome synchronised swimmers.

The story behind Paddle Pals

Paddle Pals is the first of four adverts in the new campaign and it stars Ruby Rose and her nan.

In the ad, we see the pair enjoying a game of online bingo on their tablets while splashing around in a giant paddling pool. Afterwards, they flawlessly perform a synchronised swimming routine.

However, looks can be deceiving as it turns out that Ruby Rose and her gran had a little help from a professional synchronised swimming team called Aquabatix.

According to Aquabatix, they worked closely alongside the production company (Outsider) and creative agency (Antidote) behind the Paddle Pals ad to help make it looks as convincing as possible.

Aquabatix came up with a routine that could be easily performed in a paddling pool rather than a larger swimming pool by the ad’s two actresses. The company also provided Gala with two body doubles for some of the harder moves.

What other ads do Gala have planned?

The idea of the ad series is to show that bingo has a multigenerational and diverse appeal. Therefore, there will be three other adverts coming to our TV screens over the coming months that feature a range of different characters.

For example, Ice Queen shows a sassy drag queen braving the elements as she struts down the garden path to put the bins out. Ballad of RG takes us to a barnyard where we’re reminded to play responsibly, take breaks, and set deposit limits, and Walk on the Wild Side features a backflipping gent playing bingo while doing the laundry.
