Return of Kong Megaways Review
Fans of Nintendo’s Donkey Kong will surely like Blueprint Gaming’s Return of Kong Megaways slot. The cheeky monkey king is back here with the signature 117,649 ways to win format along with the usual flurry of special features we’ve come to expect from Megaways games.
There are also collectable trophies for extra prizes. Keep reading our Return of Kong Megaways review for the low down.
How to play
If you’ve played any Megawaysф slots before, you’ll know that they look slightly different with 6 reels instead of the usual 5, and the reels can hold anywhere from 3 to 7 symbols per spin. Despite the slightly different form, getting started with Return of Kong Megaways really isn’t much different from any video slot.
To play, start by setting your bet size. Minimum bet is 10p and it can go up to £100 a spin if you want to play the max bet. Once that is set, you’re ready to spin. The Spin button is on the right side of the screen and somewhat discreet as it’s engraved on the stone that Kong is standing on. The Autoplay settings can be found under it.
Symbols in Return of Kong Megaways
The symbols in Return of Kong are:
- Kong
- Rhino
- Tiger
- Parrot
- A, K, Q, J, 10, 9
Special Symbols:
- Wild: Leaf
- Scatters: Barrel, the letters K, O, N and G
Additionally, to the left of the screen you’ll see a meter of monkey trophies. Every now and then, a monkey trophy will land on the reels and be collected in the meter. Once you collect 3, you’ll trigger a special round which we’ll cover in the Special Features section!
There are no paylines in Megaways slots, and as few as 2 of the Kong symbols on adjacent are enough to bring you coins. You will need at least 3 matching symbols if it’s not a Kong symbol though.
Kong is clearly the star and is by far the highest value symbol and pays 10x more than the next symbol, the Rhino. The other characters pay rather modestly and just a bit above the A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9 symbols. Keep your fingers crossed for the monkey because the ape is the one who’s going to bring the money in.
Return of Kong Megaways has an RTP of 96.03% and it’s known to be a medium to high volatility slot. The high volatility part means that although your odds of winning big in a short time are higher, the overall payout from the game is lower. In plain language, this slot can eat away at your bankroll quite quickly, so do be careful if you’re on a budget.
Jackpot
Return of Kong Megaways does not have a progressive jackpot. The highest value symbol is Kong, and 6 of them will pay 5x your bet. We know, that sounds like peanuts, but that’s not how Megaways slots work because you are more likely to get numerous matching symbols paying out with just one spin. You also want to add on the multipliers that come from the cascading reactions. Again, more about that in the Special Features section, but know that you can win up to 50,000x your bet.
Special Features
The excitement in Return of the Kong Megaways is all in the special features. Other than the funky layout and a ton of ways to win, other niceties you can count on are:
Cascading Wins: Also known as Reactions. Basically, whenever you spin a win, the winning symbols will vanish and new ones will replace it. This process keeps happening until there are no more wins. It’s like re-spins.
Mystery Kong: Like in the original King Kong Cash slot, the ape will occasionally throw barrels down the screen. These golden barrels can turn into any one of the other symbols to help deliver a massive winning combination.
Free Spins Features: The letters K, O, N and G work as scatters that can trigger a round of 12 Free Spins. For each Scatter above 4, you’ll get 5 extra spins for them. The best part is that these spins come with an increasing, unlimited multiplier stepping up 1x with each spin.
Golden Monkey: Every now and then you’ll see a shiny, golden monkey trophy on your screen. These are collected on the meter on the left of the screen. When you have collected 3, you will get 2 extra Free Spins and a guaranteed increase in ways to win on these spins.
Graphics and Sounds
Blueprint Gaming did a fantastic job in this arena. Kong is as cheeky and lovable as ever, and that colourful, friendly jungle vibe from King Kong Cash can also be found here. The 3D cartoon style is vibrant and it feels very much like a video game. The audio is smooth with a funky, but not disruptive, drumbeat in the background along with the occasional monkey chatter.
Conclusion
Return of Kong Megaways is a high volatility slot with mostly low paying symbols, so this may not be the most financially rewarding game you could be choosing if you’re in it for the long run. However, if you like Megaways slot, then Return of Kong is definitely a nice add to the collection. Like other Megaways game, this is a bit of a wild slot with cascading wins, unlimited multipliers, collectable trophies, Free Spin bonus games and of course, more ways to win than you could possibly keep track of.
