Here is the news, if you haven’t heard. Many moons ago Playtech released a whole host of slots based on Marvel superheroes, then Disney bought Marvel and told Playtech to go and do one. So, Playtech rebranded all those Marvel slots as ‘Age of the Gods’ and they proved to be almost as successful.

Well, in recent times Playtech has released a second series of linked games, entitled Kingdom’s Rise which had a unique feature – you could use your winnings to buy a feature on one game in the series while you were playing on a completely different game. But then the UKGC came along and told Playtech that – for players in the UK – the ‘buy feature’ idea was a definite no-no. But Playtech is soldering on with both series and have now released a further game in the Age of Gods series – Epic Troy. Another Kingdoms Rise slot – Captain’s Treasure – is due soon.

Troy was an important city in Roman times, perched on the edge of what is now modern-day Turkey. One day, many moons ago one Helen of Sparta, famed for her beauty, was kidnapped by the naughty Paris of Troy to be his bride, sparking the Trojan War. The Trojans were winning the war until they accepted a parting gift by the Greeks of a massive hollow horse, unaware that it was cunningly filled with deadly Spartan soldiers.

How to Play

Epic Troy is a typical slot in that it has five reels and three rows. This is an ‘all ways win’ slot in that all possible pay lines are available. You just have to get a winning line on each reel in succession – which row they land on is irrelevant. All wins count from the left-hand side and most contain at least three identical symbols.

All spins are paid via a total bet amount, not per coin. The minimum total bet is £0.20, and the maximum is £500. In effect, it cost 20 coins per spin, and all wins are paid out in relation to your coins size.

The ‘Wild’ symbol is wild in Epic Troy. It substitutes for all other symbols except for the scatter symbol but only appears on reels two, three and four.

  • 5 x Helen symbols = 50 coins (max £1,250)
  • 5 x Paris symbols = 30 coins (max £750)
  • 5 x Achilles symbols = 25 coins (max £625)
  • 5 x Ship symbols = 10 coins (max £250)
  • 5 x Alpha symbols = 6 coins (max £150)
  • 5 x Beta symbols = 6 coins (max £150)
  • 5 x Omega symbols = 6 coins (max £150)
  • 5 x Sigma symbols = 6 coins (max £150)

Jackpot

As with all Age of Gods titles, there are four progressive jackpots linked to this game – Power, Extra Power, Super Power and Ultimate Power. Of the four, the Ultimate Power jackpot is the most valuable.

Jackpot wins are awarded at random. If you land the jackpot game you will be presented with a screen containing twenty coins. Keep choosing coins until you select three matching symbols. The jackpot your three coins represent is the bonus that you win.

Bonus features

Helen Respin Bonus

Two or more full Helen stacks of symbols landing on the same spin will trigger the Helen Respin bonus. You receive three respin bonuses during which all symbols become inactive aside from the Helen symbol. The staked Helen symbols are held until the end of the bonus. New Helen symbols that land are held as well, and respins are reset to three when that happens.

Once the round is over the screen is evaluated for the number of Helen symbols and a payout awarded.

Pairs Respin Bonus

This works the same as the Helen Respin Bonus except that only two respins are triggered. If at the end of the respin at least three adjacent Paris symbols are stacked they are transformed into a megawheel. This megawheel is spun once, revealing a payout of between 5x and 150x your total bet. The wider the megawheel, the bigger the prize that’s likely to be awarded.

Achilles Respin Bonus

This works in the same way as the Helen or Paris Respin Bonus except that only one respin is awarded. The triggering Achilles symbols are held for the respin and becomes wild. After the respin any Achilles symbols that land become wild as well.

Free games feature

If you land three or more golden coin scatter symbols anywhere on the reels, then you are awarded six free games. During free games, all alpha, beta, omega and sigma symbols are removed from the reels.

Graphics and Sounds

If you have played an Age of the Gods slot before then you should be familiar with the type of ‘classic’ graphics that the game uses. They are not very animated, but they do get the job done. The gameplay is quick and smooth.

The sound FX used are reasonably old-fashioned too. You’ll feel you are playing in a seaside amusement arcade as opposed to your own home with lots of clicks, beeps and fanfares. All this is backed by a suitably-epic theme.

Conclusion

It’s cool that Playtech is still releasing titles in their ‘Age of the Gods’ series, especially as they’ve now got ‘Kingdom’s Rise’ on the go as well. If you miss Playtech’s Marvel Slots (thanks, Mickey Mouse) then you will recognise the gameplay that’s on show here.

This game’s not going to win any prizes for originality, graphics or sound effects though, but that’s hardly important if you are playing with the aim of landing one of those epic Age of the Gods progressive jackpots. A nice game, if not exactly an epic one.
