World Cup 2026 Overview & What to Expect
The World Cup is held every four years, and this year’s event is being hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada in sixteen different cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Vancouver. World Cup 2026 is going to be a little different than previous versions of the tournament as there will be 48 teams competing (the last one only featured 32), divided into twelve groups of four teams.
Although there were some big surprises during the qualifying stages for the tournament (previous 4-time winners Italy didn’t make it, for instance), the favourites to win the trophy are the big names in international football, including Spain, France, Brazil, Argentina and Portugal. Some people even think England are in with a chance!
World Cup 2026 will be on free-to-air TV on both the BBC and ITV, so whether you’re a football fanatic, or are just in it for the vibes, you can play along with our World Cup bingo.

World Cup 2026 Predictions
Ahead of World Cup 2026, everyone has their own ideas about who’s going to play well, who’s going to bomb out, and who is going to lift the trophy at the end of the Final.
The top two teams from each of the twelve groups progress to the next round, plus the eight best third-placed teams. These 32 then get whittled down to 16 teams in the next round of matches, with the eight winners going through to the quarter finals. The four winners then play in the semi-finals, and the two who emerge victorious from these matches play off in the Final.
No-one can say for certain what is going to happen, of course, but here are our pre-tournament World Cup predictions.

World Cup 2026 Dates, Locations, Kick Off Times and Important Details
As World Cup 2026 is being played in North America across different time zones, you’ll need to get your head around the time difference when there are particular matches you want to watch.
England Dates and Kick Off Times
- England v Croatia: Wednesday 17 June in Dallas @ 9.00pm (UK time)
- England v Ghana: Tuesday 23 June in Boston @ 9.00pm (UK time)
- England v Panama: Saturday 27 June in New York/New Jersey @ 10.00pm (UK time)
World Cup Finals: Dates and Kick Off Times
- Semi-final 1: Tuesday 14 July in Arlington @ 8.00pm (UK time)
- Semi-final 2: Wednesday 15 July in Atlanta @ 8.00pm (UK time)
- World Cup 2026 Final: Sunday 19 July in New Jersey @ 8.00pm (UK time)
Games played on the eastern seaboard of the USA and Canada (Atlanta, Boston, Miami, New York / New Jersey, Philadelphia and Toronto) have kick-off times five hours behind UK time, so a match scheduled to start at midday in Philadelphia will be on TV at 5.00pm in the UK.
For matches played in Dallas, Houston and Kansas City add six hours (i.e., a 12.00pm match starts at 6.00pm our time), for games in the central time zone (Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey) add seven hours, while matches played on the west coast in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver start eight hours later (i.e., a 12.00pm match in LA starts at 8.00pm our time).
World Cup 2026: Where to Watch
All England matches at World Cup 2026 will be broadcast on both BBC and ITV at the same time, so how do you decide which channel to watch on?
For most people it will depend on who is behind the microphone and commentating on the matches.
World Cup Commentators: BBC

The BBC will feature Guy Mowbray, Steve Wilson, Steve Bower, Jonathan Pearce, Robyn Cowen, Steven Wyeth and Liam McLeod, along with past players Alan Shearer, Danny Murphy, Stephen Warnock, Efan Ekoku, Martin Keown, Sue Smith, Rachel Corsie, James McFadden and Paul Robinson.
World Cup Commentators: ITV
On ITV you can hear Mark Pougatch, Laura Woods, Semra Hunter, Adam Richman, Gabriel Clarke, Connie McLaughlin and Daniyal Khan alongside the pundits Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Gary Neville, Patrick Vieira, Karen Carney, Ange Postecoglou, Juan Mata, Emma Hayes (pictured), Duncan Ferguson, Jobi McAnuff and Bradley Wright-Phillips.

The good news is that not every commentator will be on every game, so you can pick and choose which channel you watch according to who is on for a particular game.
World Cup 2026 FAQs
What is World Cup Bingo?
It’s a fun way for people to get more involved in World Cup 2026. To get ready to play, all you have to do is download the free World Cup bingo card.
How do you play World Cup Bingo?
Each time one of the events on your World Cup bingo card happens, dab it! Whether it’s a big VAR controversy, an amazing goal, a big celeb turns up at a match or Scotland actually qualifies for the semi-finals, find it on your World Cup bingo card and cross it off.
When does World Cup 2026 start and how long does it last?
The first match is on Thursday 11 June and the final is on Sunday 19 July. The tournament runs for just over five weeks and is longer than previous events because there are more teams competing than ever before.
Which country has won the most World Cups?
Brazil holds the record for the most World Cup wins with five. Germany and Italy have won four times, while Argentina has three wins. France and Uruguay have won twice, while England (60 years ago!) and Spain have one win each.
What happens if a player gets sent off in World Cup 2026?
If a player gets a red card, they get sent off immediately and their team has to play the rest of the match with 10 men. They are also automatically banned for the next match, but for some offences it can be even longer. An odd new rule for World Cup 2026 is that a player can get sent off if they cover their mouth during an argument!
What is VAR?
VAR stands for Video Assistant Referee, who is essentially an official watching the game on TV screens who checks the ref’s on-field decisions. VAR can overturn things like goals, penalties and red cards, but it frustrates fans because it can sometimes take what seems like an age for a final decision to be made, which drains away all the joy and emotion!
What is a penalty shootout and when do they happen?
If scores are still level after extra time (the 30 minutes that are added on if the regular 90 minutes ends in a draw), there will be a penalty shootout. Each team takes 5 penalties alternately, but if the score is still tied it goes to sudden death. This means teams take one kick each until someone misses or a penalty is saved.
