Gonzo’s Quest Megaways Slot Review
It’s fair to say when Gonzo first appeared in the slotting world in 2011 in NetEnt’s Gonzo’s Quest, he stunned everyone. Never before had a slot of such playability and graphical excellence been seen. Gonzo was a real charmer, watching you spin the reels and celebrating your wins with his rad dance moves!
In THE most hotly-anticipated slot release of 2020, Gonzo is back in Gonzo’s Quest Megaways. NetEnt have passed the Gonzo baton to their subsidiary Red Tiger, who have added the Megaways concept on licence from Big Time Gaming.
The question is, have Red Tiger improved this slot with a sequel, or have they done a Star Wars: The Phantom Menace? You can read our exclusive review to find out, or you can play the slot yourself at one of these trusted UK slot sites:
How to Play
Getting Gonzo spinning could not be easier. The first step you need to take is to select the size of your coin, which can be anything from £0.10 to £40.00. Each spin of this slot will cost you ten coins. Hit the spin button once you have decided upon your stake, or choose autospin if you want to play a few spins in a row using the same stake.
This slot is an ‘all ways pay’ slot with the usual Megaways spin. There are six reels in total and each reel, when it lands, can have between two and seven symbols upon it. This maxes out the number of paylines to an amazing 117,649! You just have to land identical symbols in sequence from the left-hand reel onwards – the actual position of each symbol on a reel does not matter.
As with the original, all of the symbols are Aztec-style masks. The more colourful masks are the highest paying symbols, and the less colourful ones are the lowest paying ones.
Jackpot
First up, Red Tiger have not added a progressive jackpot to this slot. The maximum payout for one payline is 150 coins for six red masks, which is 1,500 times your stake. There are multipliers too, the maximum multiplier being x15. This can make for some hefty wins, and don’t forget that with so many paylines, multiple line wins are very possible indeed.
Special Features
The features here are the same as with the original, but an extra one has been added. Full details here:
Avalanche Reels: As with the original and Megaways slots in general, all winning symbols explode when they contribute to a win. The symbols above them fall down when this happens and new symbols appear from above to replace them. This can trigger a fresh win and avalanche wins continue until no new ones are achieved. For each avalanche win, an overall win multiplier advances from 1x, 2x, 3x and finally 5x. The multiplier is reset once no more avalanche wins can be achieved.
Free Falls Bonus: Again as with the original you can earn yourself free falls, or spins. You need to land a minimum of three Golden Coin symbols anywhere on the reels to earn nine free falls. For each Golden Coin symbol you land above three you are granted an extra three free falls. During free falls the x1, x2, x3 and x5 win multiplier progression becomes x3, x6, x9 and x15.
Earthquake: The Earthquake feature can strike at any time at random, and Gonzo rushes off the reels when it does. All low-paying symbols explode, and high-paying symbols fall from above to replace them.
Graphics and Sounds
Thankfully, Red Tiger have given Gonzo’s Quest the best Megaways overhaul possible. All the charm of the original game remains in place, including a few new moves for Gonzo himself. Graphically, we simply do not think that this game could look any better. The game is a complete visual treat.
Not much has changed about the sounds used either. The symbols rumble and tumble into place and an Aztec drumbeat sounds as they do. The whole game is played against a backdrop of cicadas and other authentic jungle sounds. Gonzo mumbles and cheers, as is his normal habit.
Conclusion
How do you take a popular title and make it better? The answer is, don’t overhaul it, concentrate on what the original did well and add a few tiny but well-thought-out enhancements. That is precisely what Red Tiger have done to this NetEnt classic with of course a little help from Big Time Gaming and their Megaways concept. It’s a pleasure to meet up with the ageless Gonzo again for a few Megaways spins. Why not make it your quest to play Gonzo’s Quest Megaways at one of our many recommended slots or bingo sites?
