78% of People Say Terms Aren't Easy to Understand – 5 Key Things to Look For

If you have ever slid past a long screen of terms and conditions without understanding much of it – you are not alone.

According to our 2026 Player Survey of 1,915 UK players, only 22% of people say terms are easy to understand.

But fear not, we’re going to break down the 5 key things to look for.

The 78% of Players

Our 2026 Player Survey asked 1,915 UK players how they feel about the terms and conditions on casino and bingo sites. The verdict was not kind:

  • Only 22% found them easy to understand
  • 35% called them outright difficult
  • 43% shrugged and picked “neither easy nor difficult”

Add it all up and barely one player in five feels the small print is clear.

What makes those numbers interesting is that this is not a lazy audience; three-quarters of players (75%) look at reviews before they join, and 60% say they read the terms before claiming an offer.

it probably isn’t you

If you have ever felt slightly confused by a set of bonus terms, some rather satisfying science suggests the fault lies with the writing, not with you.

In 2022, researchers at MIT and the University of Edinburgh analysed millions of words of contracts and found the problem is the way the text is built.

Terms are often stuffed with low-frequency jargon, the passive voice, and jamming long definitions right into the middle of a sentence.

The kicker came the following year. In a 2023 follow-up published in PNAS, the same team tested actual lawyers and found that even they preferred plain English and understood it better.

Why it matters to your money

This isn’t a technicality, because with bonuses the terms are the offer; the wagering requirement, the cap on what you can withdraw, the games that secretly don’t count, the clock ticking in the background.

A bonus you can’t understand isn’t really a bonus.

Every UK casino site and bingo site on WhichBingo has been thoroughly reviewed and rated for the quality of its promotions, wagering, and more – so if you’re unsure, give them a look.

The 5 key things to look for

Next time you’re considering a bingo or casino bonus, look out for these five key areas before you commit:

  • The wagering requirement: How many times you have to bet the bonus before you can withdraw anything from it. A “10x” tag means a £10 bonus needs £100 of play first.
  • The maximum cash-out: Some offers quietly cap how much you can withdraw from bonus winnings. Many offers will cap equal to how much you have deposited since joining.
  • Which games count: Not every game contributes equally to clearing that wagering requirement. Slots often count 100%, while table games and bingo may count far less, or nothing at all.
  • The expiry date: Bonuses come with a clock. If you can’t meet the wagering requirement in the time given, the offer will disappear.
  • The maximum bet while wagering: Many sites limit your stake per spin or game while a bonus is active. Go over it, even by accident, and you can forfeit the lot.

If you can find those five and follow them, you’re in the best position to get the best value from a bonus.

So, where do you sit?

Roughly four players in five are squinting at the same impenetrable paragraphs you are.

The next time a set of terms leaves you none the wiser, you don’t need to feel alone.

Are you in the 22% who find this stuff perfectly clear, or somewhere in the muddled majority who’ve learned to treat the small print as a foreign language?
