The residents of what was once Europe’s largest council estate are up in arms about Stoke-on-Trent council’s failure to bring back its popular weekly bingo night at the estate’s local community centre. Prior to COVID-19, the event was attended by over 100 people, many of whom say that it was their only chance to make friends and socialize.
According to some of the residents, the council (which operates the community centre’s bar) says it doesn’t have enough people to staff the events. However, residents of the Bentilee housing estate (which is one of Stoke’s most deprived areas) feel that the council is letting them down. A local councilor says he was assured in January that the council would “sort it out” while one of the event’s former organizers believes that the council simply doesn’t “care about the community”.
