The 5 Most Awkward Awards Moments Ever

The 5 Most awkward awards moments ever: A Countdown

Countdown To The Cringe

Red carpets and awards ceremonies are supposed to be flawless, but real life tells a very different story.

From trips and falls to unexpected underwear exposure, these are the most awkward awards show moments debated in WBHQ, ranked in full cringe style.

With the WhichBingo Awards 2026 fast approaching, let’s down the unpredictability that makes live events unforgettable.

#5: The One With “I’mma Let You Finish”

Kanye West

What: Possibly the most awkward and iconic awards stage invasions ever. Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift mid-acceptance speech, grabbed the mic and delivered one of the most quoted lines in pop culture history:

“I’mma let you finish”

The crowd booed. Beyoncé and Taylor both looked horrified. The end.

When: 2009 VMAs

Why: Basically, Kanye West stormed the stage to declare Beyoncé deserved to win more than Taylor.

#4: The One With The Slap

Will Smith

What: Nobody had Will Smith walking on stage mid-ceremony to slap Chris Rock live on air on their Academy Awards bingo card. The audience looked confused. Viewers at home thought it was scripted but it really wasn’t. Moments later came the now-infamous line: “Keep my wife’s name out your “beepin'” mouth!”

When: 2022 Academy Awards

Why: The Hollywood grapevine reports that Chris Rock made a joke referencing Jada Pinkett Smith. What followed dominated global headlines for weeks and overshadowed the rest of the ceremony entirely.

The countdown is on, but voting is still open until Friday 3rd April.

#3: The One With The Bum Wiggle

Jarvis Cocker

What: Jarvis Cocker of Pulp fame quite literally inserted himself into Michael Jackson’s BRIT Awards performance. He stormed the stage mid-song and wiggled his backside at the audience and cameras before security dragged him off.

When: 1996 BRIT Awards

Why: Cocker later said he took issue with Jackson’s performance and decided his response would be an impromptu stage invasion. It was chaotic. Peak 90s British behaviour.

#2: The One With The Trap Door

Gemma Collins

What: Gemma Collins from TOWIE strutted across the stage and promptly disappeared into an open trap door. One second she was slaying, the next, she was gone. Social media sent the fall viral.

When: 2017 BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards

Why: More of a misstep than a malfunction. Collins managed to laugh it off. It was still massively cringe though.

#1: The One With Judy Finnigan

Judy Finnigan

What: Quite possibly the most infamous British awards show mishap ever, Judy Finnigan’s dress slipped down live on stage at the National Television Awards, revealing more top-half underwear than a stunned nation (world?) should ever see. Amidst the gasps, co-presenter and hero husband Richard Madeley attempted damage control.

When: 2000 National Television Awards. (Yes, if you’re as old as us you’ll be shocked to realise this happened over 25 years ago).

Why: A wardrobe malfunction apparently. How she didn’t feel a sudden draft up top is still beyond understanding. Judy handled it with humour and you have to love her for it, but the sheer cringe factor is limitless. Nothing has quite topped it since.

Roll On The WhichBingo Awards 2026

Before anyone panics, we’re not adding in any trap doors at the WhichBingo Awards 2026 so Charlie Shakespeare should be safe.

Here’s hoping the WhichBingo red carpet is more glamour than cringe.

Don’t forget you can still cast your vote for the WhichBingo Awards!
