It takes an exceptional person to use their winnings to help others, and that’s exactly what Sharon Discombe did.
61-year-old Sharon, an Exeter grandmother of 13, struck a £20,000 full-house prize during Mega Money Live game at Mecca Bingo Exeter this month.
And she and her husband, Darren, immediately put the winnings toward helping the community.
“I was crying and shaking”
Sharon said the win was completely unexpected – but that it had an eerie coincidence.
“I was focussed on dabbing the numbers off on my paper ticket, but something just told me to look at my tablet – and I was just two numbers away from a full house,” she said.

“I leaned across to my husband and said, ‘I need 58 and 47.’ As I said ‘58,’ it came up, and then ‘47’ followed straight after!
“I can’t describe the reaction in the club — it just erupted. Everyone was cheering and clapping. I mouthed £20,000 to my husband and he did the same back to me. We couldn’t believe it. I was crying and shaking.”
The moment electrified the Exeter club on North Street.
“When Sharon’s win was announced, she was in complete shock — shaking so much she had to hand the tablet to her husband,” said Jackie Andrew, assistant manager at Mecca Bingo Exeter. “The place was in uproar; everyone was cheering. It was just incredible to witness.”
Investing Her Win Into the Community
Sharon’s win wasn’t destined for luxury. Instead, she and her husband immediately invested the £20,000 into their wheelchair-accessible taxi business, launched to serve people often left without reliable transport.
“A lot of taxis don’t take wheelchair users, but ours are specially adapted,” Sharon explained. “My husband bought a new taxi that evening, and it means we can keep growing and helping others – it’s the best feeling.”
The couple run W.A.V.E Wheelchair Access Vehicles Exeter, a service that provides door-to-door transport for wheelchair users to medical appointments, social outings, and shopping trips, waiting while customers complete their errands.

Her generosity didn’t stop there. Before heading home, Sharon bought a round of drinks for the Mecca team to celebrate the win.
And that same night, she landed two more £100 wins – a hat-trick of luck that has already been transformed into something far greater for her community.
