Creature from the Black Lagoon Slot Review
Inspired by the cult movie from 1954, NetEnt partnered up with Universal Pictures to deliver the Creature from the Black Lagoon slot. This is a 5 reel, 20 payline game with a bit of a retro vibe, spreading wilds and free spins as you venture with an exploration team into the Amazon in search of this mythical creature.
Like most NetEnt slots, the production value in this slot is top notch and the gaming experience is smooth. Keep reading our Creature from the Black Lagoon slot review for all the details.
How to play
Before you dive straight in, you will need to set your bet size. The 20 paylines in Creature from the Black Lagoon are always active, which means you only have to adjust 2 parameters to set your bet size: Coin Value and Level. Coin value starts at 1p and goes up to 50p. There are 10 Levels, with Level 1 at 20 coins. Each level goes up by 20 coins. It all comes to a minimum bet of £0.20 a spin and a maximum bet of £200. Once that’s all done and set, you’re ready to press Spin.
The Max Bet button will bring your bet Level straight up to 10 without adjusting your Coin Value. Autoplay lets you kick back for up to 1,000 spins.
Symbols in Creature from the Black Lagoon
From the highest to lowest value, the symbols in the Creature from the Black Lagoon slot are:
- Kay (Woman)
- David (Diver)
- Carl (Photographer)
- Lucas (Boat’s captain)
- Oxygen Tank
- Wild: Red, Green and Yellow symbols with Creature from the Black Lagoon logo
- Scatters: Free Spin symbol; Target symbol
The characters are the high value symbols, although the objects do pay reasonably well and there isn’t a huge discrepancy between high and low value symbols, which we do appreciate.
Then, notice there are 3 Wild symbols. Other than substituting for other symbols, these Wilds also spread. We’ll talk more about these in the Special Features section.
The RTP for Creature from the Black Lagoon is 96.47%, which makes it a fairly reliable game although it does fall in the medium to high volatility range. You probably shouldn’t count on a steady trickle of coins coming in, but you may want to brace yourself for a surprise monster payout when you least expect it.
Creature from the Black Lagoon has no progrevegas movegasssive jackpot attached. In the base game, the fixed jackpot is won when you spin 5 Kay symbols (the redheaded lady) onto a payline. This will get you 750x your bet size. Five of the other characters pay between 400 to 600x.
NetEnt has put in tried and tested bonus features that players simply love into the Creature from the Black Lagoon slot. You’ll see them coming up pretty often too.
Wilds: The 3 kinds of Wilds can appear anywhere on the reels and can substitute for all other symbols with the exception of Scatters. In the base game, these come with 1 Re-spin. Additionally, these are Sticky Wilds, which means they stay in place whether it’s the 1 Re-Spin or a round of Free Spins.
Free Spins: There is a Free Spins bonus round that is triggered by the Free Spins Scatter symbol. 3 Free Spins symbols get you 10 Spins, 4 get you 15 Spins, while 5 will get you 20 spins. During this round, a Target scatter can appear on reel 5 and this will bring the Creature up on the screen and shoot it. You’ll also find a meter showing the Creature’s health. The more you shoot, the more the Creature’s health deteriorate. Obviously, you want this thing dead but there are several levels and more special features to achieve this.
Level 1: up to 2 Target symbols collected. Wild symbols are sticky and will get you 1 re-spin
Level 2: 3 to 5 Target symbols collected. The Wild symbols will start to spread 1 reel to the left. You’ll also get 1 re-spin.
Level 3: 6 to 8 Target symbols collected. The Spreading Wild grows, now reaching 1 position further both left and right as you get another re-spin.
Level 4: 9 Target symbols collected, and the last stage. Go out with a bang and 10 Free Spins.
Graphics and Sounds
NetEnt is famous for its gorgeous graphics and Creature from the Black Lagoon is no exception. The game takes its inspiration from the cult movie in the 50s and has maintained a bit of that retro comic vibe. You’ll find yourself in the muskiness of an Amazonian rainforest. The background music is pleasantly unassuming with flutes and such, decorated with chirping birds. When you hit a payline or special symbols though, that all breaks up a bit and to give you a small shock. It was after all a horror movie! Also, watch out for the Creature!
The Creature from the Black Lagoon slot takes it cue from the horror movie from the 50s with the same name, and the game appropriately has a mellow, retro feel to it while being thoroughly modern in its game play. Sticky Wilds that can expand, collectable features and Free Spins are part of the excitement. At the same time, it’s a fairly straightforward video slot. Creature from the Black Lagoon is a solid NetEnt slot that’s worth diving into.
