Pirates of the Mediterranean is typical of branded Spearhead Studios slot games, in that it is almost a themed game, but not quite — it’s obvious which film franchise the game is based on, without using any of the actual characters or images from the originals.

How to play

Pirates of the Mediterranean is a 5 reel, 3 row video slot where 10 paylines are in play on every spin. Wins pay from left to right (except scatter wins, which pay anywhere on the reels) and are multiples of the line bet. Coins range in size from £0.01 to £10, so the minimum bet is £0.10 and the max wager is £100. Wins are multiples of the line bet, except for scatter wins, which are multiples of the total bet.

  • Parrot symbol is wild and substitutes for all other symbols except the scatter
  • Hitting 5x Wild symbols = 10,000x line bet (up to £100,000)
  • Treasure chest symbol is the scatter
  • Hitting 3x, 4x or 5x scatter symbols anywhere on the reels triggers the Free Spins Bonus feature
  • Hitting 5x scatter symbols = 125x total bet (up to £12,500)
  • Hitting 5x Pirate Captain symbols = 400x line bet (up to £4,000)
  • Hitting 5x Pirate Maiden symbols = 400x line bet (up to £4,000)
  • Hitting 5x Pirate Sailor symbols = 300x line bet (up to £3,000)
  • Hitting 5x cannon symbols = 200x line bet (up to £2,000)

The maximum jackpot that can be won on Pirates of the Mediterranean is 10,000x line bet (£100,000 when betting the maximum coin size) for hitting 5x Parrot wild symbols.

Pirates of the Mediterranean is a high volatility game with a 96.02% RTP.

Special features

Walking Wild

A Golden Parrot Walking Wild symbol can appear randomly on the reels at any time. It will then trigger a free re-spin and walk one reel to the left, and this continues until the symbol has walked off the reels. Conventional wilds that appear will become additional Walking Wilds, increasing the number of spins the feature is active for, and scatter symbols can appear when this feature is in play, so the Free Spins Bonus feature can also be triggered when Walking Wilds are in play.

Free Spins Bonus

The Free Spins Bonus feature is triggered by hitting 3x 4x or 5x scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. The Pirate Compass appears and randomly awards 10, 12, 14, 16 or 18 free spins, which are played on their own set of reels. Rather than spinning in the conventional way, symbols are ‘revealed’ as a wall of golden treasure chests peels away.

During the Free Spins Bonus, all wins are multiplied 4x, with any win featuring the Wild symbol multiplied 8x. Additional free spins can also be triggered.

Graphics and Sounds

Although this is not a branded game, it is clearly based on the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise; however, it doesn’t use any images or characters from the original movies. Nevertheless, like all Spearhead Studios slot games, there are very high production values and what is particularly impressive is the attention to detail. For instance, after a winning spin, all the symbols in the combination are linked together by a cannon fuse, which then catches light. Equally impressive is the background, which skillfully creates the sense of being on a rocking ship.

The music consists of lively, traditional sea shanties with appropriate nautical sound effects in the background. There are loud explosions and cannons firing on winning spins, and the overall atmosphere is raucous and anarchic.

Pirates of the Mediterranean is a relatively straightforward game with broad appeal and which has something for everyone. There is a good choice of bonus features, without them being too overwhelming, and the gameplay is always fast moving and engaging. It’s a high volatility game with a 96.02% RTP and a good range of payouts in both the base game and bonus rounds, and the choice of coin sizes means the game is accessible to all. The visuals and sound effects are impressive, especially during the free spins bonus round, and there is always something happening, so it’s always a fast-paced, entertaining game.
