Based on Alfred Hitchcock’s renowned 1960 film starring Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, NextGen Gaming’s Psycho slot wonderfully recreates the eerie atmosphere of the original through an excellent visual design which includes many of the film’s most iconic images, along with music and sound effects from the iconic soundtrack. Psycho is also a highly engaging slot that has a free spins bonus round, win multipliers and scatter symbols, and offers a range of jackpot payouts both during base play and in the free spins feature.

This ranks amongst NextGen Gaming’s best themed slot games due to how the theme is brought to life, as well as the engaging gameplay that is incorporated in the game. If you’re a Hitchcock fan, or just enjoy slots with a range of coin and wager sizes, then we would recommend checking out Psycho at one of our recommended UK slot sites.

How to play

Psycho is a 5 reel 25 payline video slot where all 25 lines are automatically in play on every spin. Wins pay left to right and are multiples of the line bet. There are twelve different coin sizes to choose from — 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.25, 0.50, £1,00, £2.00 and £2.50 — so the game offers a minimum bet of 0.25 and a maximum wager size of £62.50.

  • Wild symbol substitutes for all other symbols except the scatter
  • Any win where the wild substitutes is randomly multiplied by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x or 20x
  • Bates House symbol is the scatter
  • Hitting 3x, 4x or 5x scatter symbols anywhere on the reels triggers the Psycho free spins bonus round
  • 5x wild symbols = 1,250x line bet (up to £3,250)
  • 5x scatter symbols = 2,500x line bet (up to £6,250)
  • 5x Marion Crane symbols = 1,000x line bet (up to £2,500)
  • 5x Milton Arbogast symbols = 250x line bet (up to £625)
  • 5x keyhole symbols = 200x line bet (up to £500)
  • 5x room key symbols = 150x line bet (up to £375)

The biggest jackpot you can win during the Psycho free spins bonus feature is £130,000 for hitting 5x Wild symbols when the 40x multiplier is in play and when betting the maximum coin size of £2.50.

During base play, the maximum jackpot win is £50,000 for hitting 5x Marion Crane symbols with a wild substituting and the 20x multiplier in play (when betting the max). The biggest payout without wild symbols substituting is £6,250 for hitting 5x scatter symbols (at max bet).

We classify Psycho as a medium to high volatility slot with a 95.6% RTP.

Special features

Psycho free spins bonus round

The free spins bonus round is activated by hitting 3x, 4x or 5x scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. The number of free spins you are awarded depends on how many scatter symbols trigger the bonus:

  • 3x scatters = 10 free spins
  • 4x scatters = 15 free spins
  • 5x scatters = 20 free spins

During the Psycho free spins bonus round, additional wild symbols appear and any win where the wild substitutes will be randomly multiplied by 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 20x or 40x. Additional spins can also be won during the free spin feature.

Graphics and Sounds

Psycho is a well-crafted game that successfully recreates both the look and atmosphere of the original Hitchcock thriller.

The reels are backed by a parallax shower screen, one of the film’s most iconic images, and a knife randomly appears to slash the reels to create wild symbols. Other symbols are based on some of the most well-known images from the movie, such as a keyhole, a room key and an envelope of stolen money, as well as two of the main characters Marion Crane and Milton Arbogast. However, the character symbols are, a little disappointingly, drawn in a rather generic style rather than as accurate portraits of the actors who fulfilled the roles.

The soundtrack features music based on the film’s original score, including the famous shower scene. This and the creepy sound effects all contribute significantly to the overall appeal of the game.

Psycho is a game that anyone who has ever seen Hitchcock’s film will appreciate for its imagery, symbols and soundtrack. When compared to other themed or branded slots, it succeeds better than most other games in this genre, and so if the atmosphere of a game is important, you’re certainly going to enjoy Psycho.

In addition, the gameplay is fast-paced, with plenty of opportunities for winning spins, while the multipliers during the free spins bonus round create potentially huge payouts. The variety of coin sizes also means that the game is always accessible.

We recommend this as one of the best and most imaginative themed video slots that we have seen, and you can check it out for yourself at our featured UK online casinos.
