Mr Hunter first made an appearance in John Hunter and the Book of Tut; then followed up with John Hunter and the Tomb of the Aztec Queen. Now, in the third instalment of the series, the approximately-named Mr Hunter is off in search of the riches left behind by the ancient Aztec civilisation.

The good news for you if you are a fan of John Hunter (who may have been based on John Carter, an adventurer created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912 and (badly) brought to the cinema one hundred years later) is that Pragmatic Play has gone on to release two further titles in the series – John Hunter and Da Vinci’s Treasure, and John Hunter and the Mayan Gods.

If you enjoy adventurer-type slots then there are plenty of them. Play’n GO also have a series of themed slots based on father and daughter tomb raiding team Rich Wilde and Kat Wilde. How does John Carter and the Aztec Treasure to compare to such slots with similar themes? You are going to have to keep reading our review if you want to find out!

How to Play

You begin your Aztec adventure here by selecting the size of your total bet. This is a one-fee bet that covers every spin, as opposed to betting several coins. The minimum this can be is £0.20, and the maximum is £100. When you are ready to play, hit the spin button.

This is a super-sized slot in which all ways pay. Each of the five slots has between two and six rows on each spin, which means that there are a possible 7,776 paylines when this slot is at its maximum. A win is awarded if you land at least three identical symbols on the reels in sequence, starting from the left-hand reel. The row that each contributing symbol lands upon does not matter – they just have to be in sequence.

Wins are paid as a ratio of your overall bet. The maximum wins for land fix identical symbols are as follows:

  • 5 x John Carter = 400 x bet (max £400)
  • 5 x Panther = 250 x bet (max £250)
  • 5 x Snake = 150 x bet (max £150)
  • 5 x Toucan = 100 x bet (max £100)
  • 5 x Hat = 100 x bet (max £100)
  • 5 x Torch = 75 x bet (max £75)
  • 5 x Ace = 50 x bet (max £50)
  • 5 x King = 50 x bet (max £50)
  • 5 x Queen = 40 x bet (max £40)
  • 5 x Jack = 40 x bet (max £40)

Jackpot

The maximum amount you can win when playing this slot is 9,000 times to size of your bet, which is £900,000 at the maximum bet level. This is done by activating multiple paylines featuring as many beneficial symbols as possible.

Bonus Features

Wild Symbols

The Golden Wild symbol substitutes for all other symbols aside from the bonus symbol. Wilds only appear on the middle three reels, though.

Bonus Symbols

Bonus symbols appear on all reels. If you land three or more bonus symbols upon any one spin then you are awarded the free spins feature.

Free Spins

The number of free spins you are awarded is random, but the more bonus symbols you land to trigger the free spins, the higher the minimum number of free spins you will receive. Three will guarantee you five free spins, four ten and five the maximum of 15.

On each spin during free spins, a random multiplier is added. This can be as low as 2x or as high as 10x. If you land more bonus symbols during free spins then more free spins will be added to your total. Again, the greater the number of bonus symbols you land, the higher the number of free spins you are awarded.

Graphics and Sounds

For a recent game release in you may be a little surprised about John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure’s appearance, as it looks more like it was released in 2009. The symbols are largely static and do not do much unless they are involved in a win. Visually, this slot does not rank highly for appeal.

The music used is nicely epic and you can just about catch some South American elements in the mix. Wins are sounded by clashes and clangs, and a drumbeat pulsates at appropriate moments.

Conclusion

The John Hunter range of slots has become one of Pragmatic Play’s most successful slots series, but Aztec Treasure is not the best example of a John Hunter-themed slot. It ‘borrows’ heavily from Big Time Gaming’s Megaways concept without having the same thrills, plus visually it’s not that appealing. Soundwise it is fine though, and at least it has some good payouts if you are fortunate enough.

You may think differently though, so if your mission is to uncover some golden slotting goodness, then why not try a few spins of John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure at one of WhichBingo’s recommended slots and casino sites?
