Coronation Street has brought us countless star-crossed lovers during six decades on our screens, but which Weatherfield couples are remembered as the most romantic in the show’s history?
We often tune in to see the Coronation Street couples relationships unravel (well, how many really happy couples have been there apart from Stan and Hilda Ogden?), and the drama of heartbreak can make for compelling viewing, but equally important are the show’s great romances.
After all, seeing how couples forge strong, long-lasting bonds in fictional worlds can help us to better understand our own relationships, and over the years Corrie has given us some wonderful examples of romance, companionship, lust and love. Some of the most searched terms on the internet are based around these famous relationships, like ‘did Sally marry Danny’ and similar.
We decided to take a look back at the five most memorable times cupid’s arrow found its target most emphatically on Coronation Street, celebrating the couples whose bonds were so strong it felt like their relationships were part of our lives.

5. Kevin and Sally Webster
Coronation Street fans first saw Kevin Webster and Sally Seddon fall in love all the way back in 1986, and since then their relationship has been as eventful as any you could imagine. It all began when Kevin accidentally splashed Sally with water when driving past her in his van. Sally was just a teenager, but she fell hard for Kevin who offered her an escape from her domineering father Eddie. Life with Kevin was happy and carefree in the early days, painting a picture of idyllic young love, and before long they were married with two daughters, Rosie (born in 1990) and Sophie (born 1994). As the years wore on, affairs rocked the relationship between Sally and Kevin, in particular Kevin’s dalliance with his business partner Natalie Horrocks in 1997, which effectively ended his marriage. However, they got back together in 2002 and decided to remarry, staying together through Sally’s battle with breast cancer in 2009. Sadly, Kevin’s infidelity was once again their undoing, and although they have shared moments of passion since then, it seems one of the street’s great romances will never be rekindled.

4. Dev and Sunita Alahan
Sunita was all set for a marriage arranged by her parents before she confided her doubts to her boss, Dev Alahan. That was all the way back in March 2001, and Dev offered her a place to stay while she worked out the next steps of her life. Corrie viewers will remember how she then went to work as a barmaid at The Rovers Return and began a tumultuous relationship with Ciaran McCarthy, and later a brief fling with Danny Baldwin. However, like many of the strongest relationships, the one between Dev and Sunita grew out of a period of hardship when Sunita was diagnosed with an aneurysm and a brain tumor. Dev supported her and soon realised he was in love with her, sparking a wild storyline when his partner Maya Sharma found out and was hell bent on getting revenge. Dev and Sunita survived Maya’s plots, got married and became the parents of twins in 2005. The marriage did not last long, but their love was rekindled years later, only for Sunita to die tragically in 2013 leaving Dev bereft.

3. Ken and Deidre Barlow
Love that endures through hardship and betrayal is often the strongest of all, and that’s why Ken and Deidre Barlow’s relationship is number three on our all-time list of Coronation Street’s greatest romances. Ken was initially afraid of commitment when he found out Deidre, a younger woman, hoped to marry him back in 1980. It took a year to bring him round, and in 1981 a TV audience of more than 24 million watched Deidre and Ken tie the knot. A decade of romance punctuated by affairs followed, and the couple divorced in 1989. However, they reunited 10 years later and remarried in 2005. This time they stuck together, despite numerous further affairs, all the way through until Deidre died in July 2015.
2. Jack and Vera Duckworth
Few characters epitomise the spirit of Coronation Street quite like Jack and Vera Duckworth, whose always rocky yet somehow steadfast relationship began in 1976 when the pair met at a fairground where Jack worked on the waltzer. Their relationship lasted 32 years, during which time they were almost constantly winding each other up, frequently fighting, occasionally having affairs but also supporting each other through good times and bad. They bought the Rovers Return and lived in the pub for four years, later selling up as they grew old together. The final scenes featuring Jack and Vera were heart-wrenching, as they spoke of their love for each other just before Jack went out to the pub, while Vera unexpectedly died peacefully in her sleep. She reappeared to him in a vision two years later, and the couple shared a last dance together.
1. Roy and Hayley Cropper
The Coronation Street love that has shone more brightly than any other in the show’s history is, in our opinion, the one between Roy and Hayley Cropper. Their relationship broke new boundaries for television too, bringing the first transgender character to a British soap opera when Hayley revealed to Roy that she was born male. Roy struggled with the news at first, but realised he couldn’t bear to be without Hayley in his life and together they became foster parents before marrying in 2010. Sadly, Hayley contracted pancreatic cancer in 2012 and, after suffering for a year with Roy loyally by her side, decided to take her own life by drinking a lethal cocktail. She died in his arms, a testament to the love they shared for 15 years on the show.
Charlie Shakespeare is on his travels again (he doesn’t sit still for a minute, does he!). This time, Charles is in the big smoke to uncover the magic of the famous venue: the Hippodrome. Opened over 120 years ago, the Hippodrome has been everything from an arena with a 100,000-gallon water tank sunk into the floor to where escapologist Harry Houdini performed in 1904, and a Peter Stringfellow-run club. Now, father…

It’s Safer Gambling Week so we’re taking you back to school to teach you how your brain tricks you when you gamble – and what you can do to play smarter (and safer). 3. Anyone accessing gambling sites or visiting gambling venues this week will see traditional marketing taken down in favour of Safer Gambling posters, but does anyone actually notice – and more importantly does anyone actually care? conversations we are often reluctant to have From every angle I believe strongly that Safer Gambling Week is a vitally important campaign designed to raise awareness of safer gambling and to open up conversations that…

The honeymoon phase with dating apps is officially over. As Valentine’s Day approaches, Brits admit they still think the day is relevant, but are ready to leave apps behind. A study of more than 500 Brits shows that 82% of single people would now prefer to meet a potential partner “naturally at a social event” rather than through a screen. This desire for organic connection comes as app fatigue sets…
